Transformative Revitalization: Helix Apartments Reshape Weymouth's Landscape
In a significant step forward for Weymouth's redevelopment scene, the Helix Apartments have emerged from the remnants of a former motel site, signaling a new era of progress and vibrancy. Equity Residential recently acquired this 160-unit residential complex from Trinity Green Development for $62.6 million, marking a substantial investment in the region's real estate market.
Located at 655 Washington St., the Helix Apartments represent a triumph of adaptive reuse and community-driven revitalization efforts. The site, once home to the Boston Motel shuttered by Weymouth officials in 2017, has been transformed into a modern, amenity-rich multifamily development.
Trinity Green Development's vision for the site gained momentum in December 2020 with a proposal aimed at breathing new life into the community. Supported by the rezoning of the surrounding area as a commercial overlay district in 2018, the project aimed to catalyze mixed-use development and foster economic growth.
After navigating a rigorous approval process, the project received the green light in March 2021, securing a special permit to proceed with construction. Notably, Trinity committed to making 10 of the 160 units affordable, demonstrating a commitment to inclusivity and accessibility within the development.
With pre-leasing of units commencing in December 2023, the Helix Apartments offer residents a blend of modern living spaces and retail amenities, fostering a vibrant, walkable environment. The addition of 5,500 square feet of retail space further enriches the community fabric, contributing to its dynamic growth.
Equity Residential, a prominent Chicago-based apartment REIT, now adds the Helix Apartments to its diverse portfolio of properties. With a track record of excellence spanning the nation, Equity brings a wealth of expertise and commitment to this latest acquisition, solidifying its presence in the Boston area.
In parallel, Equity Residential is spearheading the conversion of medical office spaces into 57 new residential units in Boston's West End. This conversion project, recognized as the third-largest under Mayor Michelle Wu's office conversion tax incentive program, underscores Equity's dedication to innovation and adaptive reuse initiatives.
